Your child’s first phone
A START-phone refers to a basic mobile device — such as a simple phone or watch — that allows for essential communication (calls and texts) but lacks open internet access, social media, games, or other entertainment features. These devices are intended to be turned off and stored away during the school day, but can be brought to schools that allow them.
A Startphone is a definition – not a brand
Startphone.info was created to clearly define what a Startphone is, so that parents can help drive demand for safer phones and watches designed specifically for children.
A Startphone refers to hardware built for kids — not just software solutions trying (and often failing) to protect them. That’s what makes a Startphone the safer first phone for children.
Smartphone Free Childhood describes mobile devices in three simple categories:
START phone – your child’s first phone
STEP phone – a phone that grows with your child
SMART phone – a tiny supercomputer
A START-phone can:
- Call anyone, but only receive calls from approved contacts
- Text anyone, but only receive texts from approved contacts
- Send and receive one-to-one text messages only
- Use speech-to-text and text-to-speech features (all messages are sent as traceable SMS to help prevent bullying and misuse)
- Include basic tools like a timer, alarm, stopwatch, flashlight, calendar, and notes
- Display text and emojis (no images or videos)
- Include passive or child-initiated location sharing
- Include an SOS/emergency button
- Pair with audio devices like headphones or speakers
- Play music (via screen-free Spotify access, wireless FM radio, or an MP3 player)
A START-phone cannot:
- Browse the open Internet (greatly reduces the risk of exposure to inappropriate content and unsafe interactions)
- Access social media
- Use encrypted chats
- View images or videos
- Take or share photos
- Offer games
- Download apps
- Send or receive emails or files
- Use “Reply All” or participate in group chats
Since your child will eventually use their phone without your supervision, it becomes nearly impossible to monitor everything they’re exposed to. And because handheld phones are designed to be so easily accessible, they shouldn’t double as entertainment devices for children. When a tool meant for communication also offers endless entertainment, it risks pulling children away from the healthy interaction, play, development, and growth that are essential during childhood. That’s why smartphones are for adults — and why we do not recommend them for children.
In short, a Startphone is a phone for kids — a smartphone alternative, a safe first phone, and a child-safe mobile.
