Startphone’s Anio 6 Review: The Most Kid-Friendly, Least Distracting Smartwatch from Europe
The German-engineered phone watch built by pilots to keep children connected – without unnecessary distractions.
Finding a kids’ smartwatch that balances safety with simplicity feels nearly impossible. Most devices come loaded with built-in cameras, mini-games, and pointless features.
The Anio 6 takes the exact opposite approach. Designed in Germany by two Lufthansa pilots, Michel and Mark, this 4G phone watch focuses strictly on essential communication, location safety, and minimal distraction.
We’ve tested Anio 6 during July and August 2026, and here are our findings:
Anio In Short
Best for: Active kids who would accidentally leave a mobile phone in their backpack or on the sports field.
Why it stands out: Beautiful design and build quality with clear call sound. The absence of a camera is fantastic for privacy – a surprisingly rare feature in kids’ smartwatches.
Setup: Plug in a cheap SIM card from your local carrier (calls + ~500 MB data/month) and you are ready to go!
Open Feedback to Anio
The only real distraction on the watch is the step counter. Counting steps sounds fun in theory, but it can create unnecessary pressure, especially for young girls.
In practice, we found it to be a bit distracting. On a device this clean, any extra metric easily becomes the primary thing a child focuses on.
Thankfully, after sharing this feedback, the Anio team listened, and it sounds like an option to disable the step counter will be rolled out in the future! 🙌

Not Waterproof, But Remarkably Durable
During our testing, our 9-year-old spontaneously went stand-up paddleboarding while still wearing the Anio, eventually jumping into the water for a swim. (This actually happened twice!)
Both times we immediately buried the watch in a bowl of dry rice as a precaution, and it survived completely intact and continues to work perfectly.
While we definitely do not recommend swimming with an Anio, it is reassuring to know how durable it is.
To Track Or Not
The GPS tracking, Safe Zones, and SOS alarm functions are completely optional and easy to turn off.
However, even privacy-conscious families might appreciate these tools in specific scenarios – like downhill skiing or hiking in nature where kids naturally wander ahead.
Availability & Market Expansion
Originally established across Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, Anio is expanding across Europe. Having recently launched in Denmark, a broader rollout across the Nordic region is currently underway.
